Every March, Eisenach welcomes the warm season with the traditional “Sommergewinn” festival. This event, which symbolically drives away winter, is one of Germany’s oldest and largest spring festivals and has a deep cultural connection to the city and region. Every year, three weeks before Easter, the festival attracts more than 25,000 visitors from near and far. The grand parade with its elaborately designed floats, the staged debate between Frau Sunna and Herr Winter, and the subsequent fair at the city's festival grounds make the Sommergewinn an unforgettable experience.
Here, you will learn what makes this folk festival special, what there is to discover, and who the people are that organize and bring this major event to life every year.
Why You Should Visit the Sommergewinn in Eisenach
The Eisenach Sommergewinn invites everyone to come together to banish winter and welcome spring. This traditional festival captivates with a unique mix of customs, entertainment, and a fair. Why is a visit worthwhile? Here are the key reasons:
- One of Germany’s oldest spring festivals: The Sommergewinn has a tradition of over 700 years and has been part of Germany’s intangible cultural heritage since 2016. The custom dates back to the 13th century and has been celebrated as a festival regularly since the 15th century.
- Historical significance & unique traditions: The Sommergewinn originated in Eisenach’s poorest district and developed over the centuries into a festival that unites all social classes and generations. At its core is the symbolic victory of Frau Sunna over Herr Winter—of summer over winter and life over death.
- Spectacular parade with a traditional debate: More than 1,200 participants, over 40 decorated floats, and numerous marching bands move through the city to celebrate the arrival of spring. The highlight is the public debate between Frau Sunna and Herr Winter on the market square, where the fate of the seasons is decided.
- A folk festival for the whole family: In addition to the parade, amusement rides, regional delicacies, and a colorful entertainment program on the festival grounds ensure a great time for all ages.
- Culture & satire: The “Kommersche” take place in the lead-up to the Sommergewinn and offer humorous, satirical performances, along with music and dance, poking fun at local affairs while creating a cheerful atmosphere.
- Community & engagement: Schools, clubs, kindergartens, craftsmen, and numerous volunteers actively contribute to the Sommergewinn, keeping its traditions alive.
Experiencing the Eisenach Sommergewinn means immersing yourself in a festival full of joy that has endured for centuries and, like the Wartburg, has shaped the city's culture.
This is How the "Kommersche" Kick Off the Sommergewinn
Before the grand parade winds through Eisenach’s streets, the city kicks off celebrations a week earlier with the traditional Kommersche, two entertaining and musical festival evenings. At the Werner-Aßmann-Halle, it’s time for “Stiegker Humor,” dance, and an upbeat mood.
The three-hour program is performed by amateur artists, offering witty speeches, musical acts, and traditional dances. Visitors can look forward to a vibrant mix of satire, local flavor, and engaging music:
- Stiegker Humor: The iconic figures Hermine and Schorsch deliver sharp-witted commentary on Eisenach’s latest happenings.
- Energetic dances: The Wartburg Ensemble, the Eisenach Dance Club, and the festival hall cleaners bring energy with their choreographed performances.
- Musical highlights: The fanfare band of Wartburgstadt provides thrilling moments, while the “Blütenfrauen” (Blossom Ladies) get the entire hall singing along.
- The next generation: Even the youngest performers, including the “Wänst vom Stiegk” and the “Stiegker Youth,” have their moment on stage.
- Germanic surprises: The old Germanic tribes also join in the fun, proving they are more than just fire-side storytellers.
- The festival’s main characters: Frau Sunna and Herr Winter also attend the cheerful evening—openly expressing their seasonal rivalry.
After the official program, the fun continues: An after-show party invites guests to dance late into the night.

The Parade is the Highlight of the Sommergewinn in Eisenach
The Sommergewinn kicks off with an impressive spectacle: The traditional parade, which starts at 2:00 PM on Saturday and winds its way through the streets of Eisenach. More than 1,200 participants, over 40 walking groups, numerous marching bands, and over 100 horses accompany the elaborately designed floats through the city.
The parade has been a fixed part of the Sommergewinn since 1897 and reflects Eisenach’s cultural diversity and rich traditions. A key highlight is the historical conclusion of the “driving out of death” ritual: Winter is symbolically defeated to make way for spring.
The parade traditionally starts in the Weststadt district, where the Sommergewinn originated as a folk festival, and moves through the city before dispersing around Hospitalstraße at approximately 5:00 PM. Around 4:00 PM, the parade reaches the market square, where the traditional debate between Frau Sunna and Herr Winter takes place.
The full parade route:
Adam-Opel-Straße → Kasseler Straße (B84) → Frankfurter Straße (B84) → Ehrensteig → Katharinenstraße → Georgenstraße → Hinter der Mauer → Sophienstraße → Nikolaistraße → Karlsplatz → Johannisstraße → Johannisplatz → Schmelzerstraße → Marktplatz → Georgenstraße → Hospitalstraße

Decorated Streets & Parade Floats: Since the 1950s, Eisenach’s houses have been adorned with intricately crafted crepe paper flowers—a tradition that began in the Georgenvorstadt district and later spread to other parts of the city. More than 400,000 handmade paper flowers are also created annually by local clubs over months of work to decorate the parade floats.
The parade follows a structured lineup, starting with an introduction, followed by the themed section (which changes each year), and finally, the traditional procession. In 2025, the theme “Rare Crafts in Thuringia” will be in focus, highlighting traditional trades such as brewing, blue dyeing, and wig-making.
What can you expect to see? The parade highlights:
- A mounted herald announces the parade, followed by a fanfare band and riders carrying the symbols of the Sommergewinn—Hahn (rooster), Ei (egg), and Brezel (pretzel)—as well as additional floats and walking groups.
- The themed section is led by a float displaying the year's motto. This is followed by themed walking groups, decorated floats, vehicles, carriages, marching bands, and riders.
- In the traditional part of the parade, Winter and his entourage make their appearance. The procession includes walking groups as well as the Snow Queen, the Winter Guard, and ultimately Herr Winter himself.
- After Winter comes the group carrying torches and a straw effigy, followed by participants symbolizing the sweeping away of winter.
- Next comes the arrival of spring, represented by the Spring Heralds, the Spring Court, the Spring Guard on foot and horseback, and a dedicated float for Lenz (Spring)—again followed by more walking groups, carriages, and floats.
- The final section is marked by the triumphal arrival of the sun. Led by small and large sunbeams, as well as her mounted guard, Frau Sunna eventually makes her grand entrance on her float. She is followed by additional walking groups, parade floats, and a fanfare band.
- The parade traditionally ends with the "Stiegker Originals": unique local figures played by individual performers who deliver witty and folksy satire in the local Stiegker dialect, often poking fun at Eisenach’s current affairs.
- Finally, the last float of the procession bids farewell: "See You at the Next Sommergewinn."
The Sommergewinn parade culminates with the debate between Frau Sunna and Herr Winter, a symbolic showdown on Eisenach’s market square. This traditional dialogue, written in the 1960s by Helmut Stietzel (1923–2000), serves as the dramatic finale of the parade. The performance on the market square is one of the most unforgettable moments of the Sommergewinn:
- Frau Sunna challenges Winter and declares that his reign over the land has ended.
- Herr Winter fights back, asserting his unbroken power—ice, snow, and storms have yet to be defeated.
- Frau Sunna calls upon Mother Earth and Brother Lenz to awaken spring and bring nature back to life.
- Herr Winter realizes that, despite his resistance, his strength is fading in the face of the combined opposition and pleads for mercy—yet to no avail.
- Frau Sunna seals the victory of spring, while Winter is symbolically vanquished in the form of a burning straw effigy.
Festival Badges, Postcards & Paper Flowers: To support the parade, a small donation of €3.50 is requested at entry points. In return, visitors receive a thematically designed festival badge made of embossed leather or a festival booklet. Additionally, throughout the four weeks leading up to the Sommergewinn, decorative flower bouquets in various sizes and colors, as well as postcards, can be purchased from the Sommergewinn guild.
Firewheel Rolling at Wolfgang: On the Sunday following the parade, the festivities conclude with the spectacular rolling of the firewheel at Wolfgang. The firewheel symbolizes the rolling sun, bringing light and warmth to the valley after a long winter. In 1709, Eisenach schoolteacher Johann Michael Koch documented this ritual, which dates back as far as 1650. At that time, young men and women would roll a burning wheel with a straw effigy—the "death"—from Metilstein down the hill. Since 2010, the Germanic firewheel rolling has been revived on "Laetare Sunday" at the Lehde, above Wolfgang. The firewheel remains an essential part of the Sommergewinn and its recurring theme of spring’s victory over winter.

The Fair Takes Place at Eisenach’s Festival Grounds
In addition to the traditional parade, the accompanying folk festival ensures a lively atmosphere throughout the city. For over a week, amusement rides, game stalls, raffles, and culinary booths invite visitors to celebrate and enjoy.
The festivities kick off on Friday with a ceremonial torch and lantern procession, starting at 6:30 PM at the guild house in Gargasse. Led by Eisenach’s night watchmen and the fanfare band of the Wartburg city, the procession makes its way to the “Spicke” festival grounds, where at 7:00 PM, the mayor of Eisenach and the Sommergewinn guild master officially open the festival by tapping the first barrel of Sommergewinn festival beer.
The “Spicke” festival ground on Adam-Opel-Straße is the largest of the three festival locations, covering an area of 10,000 m². Not only does the parade start here, but visitors will also find 600 meters of amusement rides, food stalls, raffle booths, shooting galleries, and skill-based games.
A special highlight is the grand fireworks display, set off by the fairground operators on the second Saturday between 8:30 and 9:00 PM at the Spicke festival grounds.
Opening hours 2025 for “Spicke” Festival Grounds:

The Market Square is the central meeting point of Sommergewinn and plays a key role in the parade. Primarily local fairground operators set up their stalls here, as there is limited space for larger amusement rides. Instead, the market square features regional specialties, smaller rides, and craft stands. The welcoming atmosphere makes it a popular gathering place for visitors.

Katharinenstraße, where Sommergewinn originated, is located in the Weststadt district and extends from the Market Square along Georgenstraße. The People Behind It: Sommergewinn Guild, Support Association & Volunteers
Sommergewinn in Eisenach is more than just a traditional spring festival—it is the result of months of planning, tireless organization, and the passionate commitment of many volunteers. Two associations are responsible for hosting this grand event: Sommergewinnszunft Eisenach e.V. (Sommergewinn Guild) and the Förderverein Sommergewinn Eisenach e.V. (Support Association). Together, they ensure that the tradition of Sommergewinn remains alive and continues to captivate thousands of visitors each year.
Sommergewinnszunft Eisenach e.V. is the main organizer and official host of Sommergewinn. The guild was founded to preserve and carry forward the 700-year-old tradition of this spring festival. Its members work voluntarily to ensure that Sommergewinn is held annually in the same high quality and with great enthusiasm.
The Sommergewinn Guild is responsible for:
- The parade, including the design and construction of the floats
- The Kommerschabende, featuring humorous performances and music to kick off the festival
- The preservation of traditional customs that have been passed down for generations
With around 160 members, the guild contributes over 7,000 hours of volunteer work each year. The tasks range from crafting floats to producing up to 400,000 handmade crepe paper flowers for decorations. The guild’s costume workshop is another vital part of the preparations, where new costumes for the parade performers are made, and existing ones are repaired and cleaned.
Förderverein Sommergewinn Eisenach e.V., founded in 2004, supports the Sommergewinn Guild both financially and organizationally. While the guild is responsible for the preservation of traditions and the parade, the support association plays a crucial role in marketing, fundraising, and organizing the festival’s logistics.
The main responsibilities of the support association include:
- Organizing the folk festival and coordinating the three festival locations
- Managing the Kommerschabende events
- Securing new sponsors to ensure the financial stability of Sommergewinn
- Implementing promotional campaigns to attract more visitors
With about 30 members, the support association plays an essential role in keeping Sommergewinn running smoothly. One of its most critical tasks is finding sponsors, as many aspects of the festival—including float construction, the festival booklet, and technical equipment—are funded through donations and sponsorships.
Sommergewinn would not be possible in its current form without the support of sponsors and donors. Their contributions—whether financial or material—help secure essential resources for float construction and costume production.
What donations are used for:
- Tools and construction materials for building the floats
- Fabrics and sewing supplies for the parade costumes
- Paints and crepe paper for elaborate decorations
- Printing costs for the annual festival booklet (financed through sponsor advertisements)
Anyone who wants to support Sommergewinn can do so through donations or in-kind contributions. The Sommergewinn Guild is happy to issue donation receipts upon request.
Want to get involved? Everyone is welcome to contribute, whether they have crafting skills, creative ideas, or organizational talent. Volunteers are especially needed for float construction, decoration making, and costume production.
The support association also welcomes engagement in sponsorship recruitment, marketing, and event organization. Every helping hand ensures that this historic festival continues to thrive.
Without the dedicated people working behind the scenes, Sommergewinn would not be what it is today: a lovingly crafted festival full of tradition that has put Eisenach on the cultural map beyond its city limits.

On Family Day at “Spicke” festival grounds, a one-way traffic regulation will be enforced on Adam-Opel-Straße. On that day, exit traffic will only be allowed via Nicolaus-Otto-Straße and Stedtfelder Straße from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Additionally, authorities are considering opening a temporary parking area across from Opel’s supplier companies. This decision will be made closer to the event date and will be clearly marked if available. However, access to company premises must always remain clear.
Additionally, significant changes to public transport services will take effect, particularly on the Saturday of the parade. Regional buses will not serve downtown Eisenach that day, and several city bus routes will be rerouted. However, additional public transport services will be provided to accommodate the influx of visitors.
For detailed information on traffic and public transport adjustments, visit the official Sommergewinn website before the festival.
